One of the benefits of living in California is enjoying your pool year-round. Still, there are many benefits to closing your pool during the winter, such as lower utility costs, maintaining water health, and more.
Pinnacle Pools and Landscape proudly serves the Elk Grove and Sacramento communities with first-class pool construction services that can take your winterized pool to the next level.
Here are some of the steps their contractors recommend when learning how to winterize an inground pool.
Step 1: Remove Ladders
When winterizing a pool, the first thing you must do is remove ladders and equipment such as skimmer baskets from your pool. Be sure to place your pool equipment in a concealed place and somewhere where you will not lose your items.
Step 2: Balance Water Chemistry
Next, if you have algae in your pool, shock it before you begin the closing process. Winterized pools should have between 80 and 150ppm of total alkalinity and over 180ppm of calcium hardness.
Step 3: Clean the Pool
You must skim your pool before vacuuming and brushing. The order of those three activities is vital. Before you cover your swimming pool, remove all organic matter.
Step 4: Decrease Water Level
If you use a safety cover with your pool, your water level should be between 6 and 12 inches below the tile. For a solid pool cover, water must be 3 to 4 inches lower than the skimmer portal.
Step 5: Power Down System Components
For millivolt-style heaters, you want to power down the pilot. Alternatively, you must unplug the pressure switch on gas-powered heaters. Also, turn off the LED lights, pump, and heater.
Step 6: Add Closing Chemicals
Then, you will use a winter closing kit that does not contain chlorine, which you can buy at any pool retailer. These products include all the supplies needed with instructions on using them. Make sure you seal the filter lid tightly.
Step 7: Fill Water Bags and Cover
The next step in the pool covering process is to fill your water bags to approximately 80% capacity. You should not attempt to transport your water bags after you fill them. Instead, fill them where you will place them on your winterizing cover.
Then, attach your straps and anchors and cover the pool!
